Routine Dental Examinations
Regular examinations allow us to correct problems before they become troublesome.
We aim to reinforce and promote good habits with a bespoke personalised preventative strategy for each patient with a view to optimising your dental health.
A regular dental check up is essential. The examinations ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy. You should aim to have a regular dental visit at least every 6 months or as recommended by your dental professional.
Your examination will always include the following:
- We talk to you and ask about your perception of the health of your teeth, gums and mouth.
- Any concerns about your dental health.
- Any medical conditions and medication, how this may impact your dental health and treatment.
- A life style assessment to identify any risk factors that may affect your oral health.
- Checking your jaw joints and for enlarged glands in your neck.
- Oral cancer screening involving an inspection of the soft tissues of the mouth.
- Checking current fillings, crowns and bridgework to ensure good function and aesthetics.
- Examination of tooth wear and a discussion about the causes and its prevention.
- Checking your jaw joints and for enlarged glands in your neck.
- X-ray examination of the teeth and supporting tissues at regular intervals and when clinically appropriate.
Dental X-Rays
X-rays, or dental radiographs, are an invaluable tool that your dentist uses to keep your mouth healthy. They are used to check between teeth and under fillings to check for tooth decay and calculus or tartar that may be under the gum line and to monitor gum disease. They are also used to determine available bone when planning implant treatment and determining root canal length when performing root canal treatment. They can also be used to check for abnormalities such as a dental abscess and the position of wisdom teeth relative to vulnerable nerves. See here for more information: https://www.bir.org.uk/
How often should your teeth be X-rayed?
This varies according to the individual. For most people it is recommended that teeth are X-rayed every 2 to 5 years. For those who have a higher risk of either tooth decay or gum disease, X-rays will be taken more frequently; perhaps as often as every 6 to 12 months.
Safety
All types of radiation can be harmful, from sunlight to X-rays. Dental X-ray units emit only a very small dose of radiation. For example, the dose received for a pair of small “bitewing” X-rays is the equivalent of 1 day of background radiation. Although the effect is cumulative, i.e. the dosage adds up over time, we aim to use X-rays only when justified to provide the best possible treatment.
