The Importance Of Dental Hygiene
Beautiful, clean teeth and healthy gums are key to the way we look and feel about ourselves and are important for our general wellbeing.
We advocate excellent oral hygiene. We will demonstrate the effective use of your electric or manual toothbrush combined with good interdental care, flossing and using fine brushes.
Even the best oral hygiene regimes cannot eliminate all traces of bacteria on our teeth and gums called plaque. If this is not removed, plaque can become hard calculus or tartar, which cannot be removed with a toothbrush.
This can lead to bad breath and bleeding gums, which are signs of gum disease. Working together with you and with your hygienist gum disease can be kept under control.
Prolonged Gum Treatment involves:
- Careful cleaning of the root surfaces to remove tartar and plaque deposits from deep gum pockets, under local anaesthetic.
- The root surfaces are smoothed to remove bacterial toxins and irrigated with antiseptics.
- Dentomycin (an antibiotic gel) or Periochip (a slow release antiseptic chip) are active against the bacteria causing gum disease. These can be applied directly into the gum pockets where bacteria flourish. This treatment may help reduce the depth of treated pockets, which results in an improvement in gum health.
If you practice excellent dental hygiene at home, such as thorough brushing and cleaning between your teeth as prescribed by your dentist or hygienist then some of the effects of gum disease can be reversed. This will help you to avoid future problems and help to protect your gums from any further recession.
'Hygiene Help' From Us At Dovehouse
Bad Breath
Bad breath is usually caused by malodorous gases released by the bacteria which coat our mouths. Smoking is another main cause of bad breath.
Certain illnesses such as nasal and stomach conditions may also contribute to bad breath. Particles of lingering food that get caught between the teeth can sometimes cause an unpleasant smell. A good oral hygiene regime is very important to keep your breath smelling fresh and your mouth feeling really clean.
Stained Teeth and discoloured teeth
Food, drink and tobacco can stain the teeth. Regular visits to the hygienist can remove some of these stubborn stains. If you’d like to lighten the colour of your teeth it may be possible for you to consider teeth whitening.
Bleeding Gums
Healthy gums should be pink and firm and are part of the supporting structures of your teeth. Your gums should not bleed when you floss or brush. The most common reason for bleeding gums is gum disease. Swollen and bleeding gums are a sign of gum disease, which can lead to the early loss of teeth. It is also important to realise that smoking can mask some of the signs of bleeding gums.
In any case of bleeding gums, it is important to seek advice from your dentist as soon as possible. We will check your teeth and gums and recommend a bespoke oral hygiene regime ,which will include regular appointments with our hygienists.
Prolonged Gum Treatment
Gum disease is caused by a build-up of plaque between the teeth, irritating the gums and making them swollen.
If this is not treated, it may lead to destruction of the bone anchoring the teeth in the jaw. As the disease gets worse the teeth can become loose, and eventually fall out. Often, gum disease progresses painlessly, so you do not notice the damage it is doing. Your gums may bleed when you are brushing or eating, and your breath may also become unpleasant.
